Smart phones have secured their place as the mobile device of choice all over the world. With the variety of applications available to smart phones – literally, an app for anything – users have access to new ways to pass time, get information, make purchases online, or update their social networking pages. With the prevalence of smart phone comes the increased usage of QR codes. Smart phones are beginning to come with pre-installed barcode reading applications. Android is looking to take the QR revolution to another level with the launch of their newest app: QR Droid.
QR Droid allows users not only to scan QR codes but also enables them to create their own QR codes. The codes can be linked to other apps on their phones or to bookmarks or contacts. The codes, when displayed on the screen, can be scanned by another phone, transferring the associated content to another user.
Users can also share other apps with their friends by linking the app to a QR code. Scanning the code will take users to the Android Market where the app can be downloaded. Contacts can also be shared in this manner. When scanning a code associated with a certain contact, that contact will be added to the users phone.
The application also allows for GPS coordinates to be attributed to QR codes, making it easier to share directions to locations.
The codes generated by QR Droid can be scanned by any smart phone whether it is an Android of iPhone and can be scanned with any other scanning application.
