Record Industry and QR Code Technology

Mama’s Dirty Lil’ Secret, a soul-punk band out of Brooklyn, New York, will be taking advantage of QR codes to release their latest single, “Dirty Valentine.” The band has experimented with the codes online through their website and Facebook page to see how their fans take to the codes. The reaction has been favorable and so the band decided to take the next step by offering their latest release via QR code.

The Deacon, lead vocalists and guitarist for the band, had seen QR codes on other websites and had paid them no mind. It was not until he started scanning the codes himself that he became interested in using them as promotional tools.

QR codes are seeing a more attention from the music industry as artists and record labels discover their use in providing dynamic content for consumers. Some artists, like Mama’s Dirty Lil’ Secret, have taken to releasing song that are only obtainable through the scanning of the code.

The band is release their latest single in conjunction with their upcoming performance at The Delancey in New York City during Valentine’s weekend.

With QR becoming a part of everyday life in the U.S., more businesses and enterprising individuals are likely to incorporate the codes into their ventures. With smart phone usage escalating, businesses are keen to take advantage of the ever growing population of smart phone users. In providing content through QR codes, companies are setting up a foundation for a future run, in part, by mobile technology.
