On April 29th this year, women across the world sat glued to the television watching the royal wedding. Viewers admired the handsome Prince William and were in awe of Princess Kate and her beautiful dress and Crown jewels. Well, women around the world can take heart; thanks to augmented realty (AR) and London’s Garrard jeweler, you can have a chance to see what you would look like in a tiara worth £100,000.
Augmented reality (AR) has developed out from just a novelty item and games to a fully fledged useful technology. AR is being used as a method to teach through simulation programs, used in art shows, heads up windshield displays and many other everyday applications.
Now, a London jeweler, celebrating the company’s 275th anniversary is joining with an augmented reality company to give consumers (and passerby’s) a chance to wear a (virtual) tiara. London jeweler Garrard, has been called the oldest jeweler in the world.
Although they may be the oldest jeweler in the world, they still make sure to have hip, in-the-know creative directors on staff. Stephen Webster has been the creative director for Garrard’s for three years. In celebration of the company’s big anniversary, and the royal wedding, Webster decided to create magical mirror window display.
The magic part of it is an augmented reality program that overlays a beautiful diamond and spinnel tiara onto the head of the person looking into the mirror. It moves as the wearer tilts and moves their head, and the virtual jewels sparkle and shimmer with light.
The display will be in the window of Garrards for one week only, and then it will be taken down. If the fashion industry gets a peek at the window creation; we may see something similar in the U.S. soon.
