Statistics show that 77 percent of the world’s population owns a mobile device. In 2009 more than half a billion people accessed mobile internet, and usage is predicted to double within five years. Most business owners know how important it is now to have a mobile presence for their business. If you’re new to the mobile web concept, don’t worry; we’ll be covering a few of the basic practical points.
If you have a regular website, there are several options and a few basic methods you can use to make a mobile web site that will work compatibly for most users. It has been said that there are special procedures to making a mobile website. Here are a few standards to consider before you start to modify your web page(s).
First you must consider your page layout. The most important information should go at the top of the first page. Remember your logo, arrange your content in a single column and don’t use tables unless you absolutely must. Remember to minimize logo and navigation controls for phone screen specs.
Next, consider your content; make sure it is easy to read and navigate. As far as coding goes, there isn’t any special code for the mobile site. However, using basic HTML and CSS code is possible. Title tags, heading tags, description tags and filenames should be created with target keywords.
Images and page size are important. Only use images in .jpg, .gif, or .png, if you have to use images at all. When choosing a page style, keep it simple. Remember a mobile page is only about 20 Kb; keep it under 10 if possible. The more images and the larger the page size, the more it will slow down the loading process.
Finally, remember customer convenience. Use back, or return buttons, so customers don’t get caught in a dead end. Also provide links. Your URL is important; consider using a .mobi domain (made for mobile) instead of a .com or .net, used for desktop. Always test your finished product on multiple devices to ensure all areas are functional.
