The FIDO Alliance has stated that the first releases of this nature should be within the next six months.
The FIDO Alliance has claimed in a new technology news statement, that the first Android handsets with biometric scanners will be released in the first half of next year, to help to remove the dependency on traditional app and web passwords.
This will make it possible for fingerprints to be used instead of having to enter a typical password.
The companies that make up the FIDO Alliance include a number of leading companies, including PayPal, Google, and Lenovo. This latest technology news has shown that this is only the latest in a broader effort to add security to web authentication without having to resort to make the login process extremely and unnecessarily complicated.
This technology news began last February when the group sought to create an open scalable standard.
This technology news was meant to be available for any web-based service or manufacturer so that traditional text-based passwords can be replaced with these biometric alternatives. Michael Barrett, the PayPal chief information security officer, and the president of FIDO, has explained that the increasing support and power of the group has meant that it will become possible for the mobile internet to become considerably safer to use in a very short period of time. That way, swiping a finger across the smartphone will be all that is required for the access of an individual’s own online accounts, but that they will remain safe from being accessed by anyone else.
Barrett has made it clear in his technology news statement that he has no love for traditional passwords and their weaknesses and drawbacks. Within a keynote address that he made in May in Las Vegas in Interop, he stated that “Our intention is to really obliterate, within a certain number of years, both passwords and PINs and see the whole Internet — including internally in enterprises — obliterate user IDs and passwords and PINs from the face of the planet.” This appears to be the direction that many manufacturers and tech developers are taking, as the latest iPhone has already been released with fingerprint scanning abilities.
