The latest releases of wearable technology have included a number of surprises.
With the unveiling of Samsung’s updated Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatches, the manufacturer has not only managed to create a second generation device that is slimmer and lighter than its previous versions, but it has also defined itself as serious competition for the two major players that have yet to make their first major steps into the market: Google and Apple.
This is because Samsung has dropped its use of the Android operating system and focused on fitness tracking.
Instead of Android, Samsung has decided to offer a number of different kinds of fitness tracking options with its smartwatches. These wearable tech devices now come with an integrated heart monitor, among other features. In actuality, there were two different updated versions of its gadget. The first is the Gear 2, and the second is the Gear 2 Neo. They are both designed to provide the user with a considerably enhanced experience, particularly because of the poor reviews that the original Galaxy Gear had received.
While the old smartwatches were “an unripened fruit” these latest wearable gadgets have had more time in the sun.
This new wearable technology is at least 5.8 g lighter than the original, and is thinner by 1.1 mm. Instead of using Android from Google, they are now based on Tizen, Samsung’s own new operating system. It offers fitness and health tracking with overall enhanced functionality. It also offers the ability to play music using Bluetooth headphones and no longer requires a connection to a tablet or smartphone.
The Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland vice president of IT & mobile, Simon Stanford, explained that “Offering extended connectivity features, stylish customisation options and a robust application network, we have enhanced everything that people love about the original Galaxy Gear to create a second generation of wearable devices that offer unparalleled smart freedom”.
Both of these smartwatches are more than just an add on to a smartphone or for other mobile devices. While they can be used as a companion to the smartphones and tablets from Samsung, in order to be able to take advantage of internet access, call handling and S Voice access, they also have their own features, such as an integrated camera above the screen, an integrated music player, and 4 GB of storage space. They will also be able to run Tizen compatible apps both from Samsung and third parties.
