The USA Today newspaper has announced the use of Microsoft Tags, a 2d barcode that is said to be the next generation in QR. The newspaper will feature at least one of the codes in each of its print sections and will provide readers with direct access to videos and other online content. The codes will also link readers to photo galleries, sports scores, and financial news. Readers will also be able to sign up to receive updates through email or text message.

David Hunke, president and publisher of USA Today, says that using the codes is part of the newspapers overarching goal to incorporate both digital and print platforms in providing readers the news. “We are proud to be one of the first U.S. newspapers to offer these daily to our readers,” said Hunke.

Microsoft Tags are very much like QR codes. The only significant difference is their appearance. The Tags can be layered over pictures without disrupting the image much, while the majority of the pattern for QR codes must be visible, allowing only smaller pictures to be used. The Tags are being hailed as the next step in QR and Microsoft has put considerable weight behind the project.

Bill McQuain, director of Tag Product Management for Microsoft, said that the tags make the world around users clickable, allowing for a richer, more enhanced experience, especially from the newspaper.

USA Today will use the codes in the print sections of their newspaper and has plans to use them online via their website.
