Google works to promote photography over augmented reality

Google’s Project Glass has continued to make headlines since it was unveiled earlier this year. Developed by the Google X Lab, the project combines augmented reality technology with eyewear, creating a head-mounted system that can be used for a number of purposes. When Project Glass was announced, Google was keen to promote the system’s augmented reality aspects. Recently, however, the company has shied away from this approach, looking instead to promote the system’s other capabilities.

Google X executives believe Project Glass will revolutionize photography

Google is now working to promote Project Glass as the next step in mobile photography. The company has unveiled a series of new photos taken with Project Glass. The photos can be found via the PCWorld Flickr profile. Project Glass Tech Lead Max Braun spoke this week during the Google+ Photographer’s Conference, where he detailed how the glasses could change the world of photography. Braun notes that the company “sees Glass as an evolution of cell phone photography.”

Camera may be hands-free, according to photos from Google

Several Google X officials have been seen wearing the high-tech glasses recently, showing off the capabilities of Project Glass. Sebastian Thrun, a Google X executive, showed how the glasses can be used to take photos in a recent interview with Charlie Rose. Thrun initiated the camera’s glasses with a simple touch. The photos released by Google this week suggest that Project Glass’ camera can be controlled with some kind of hands-free mechanism due to the fact that several of the pictures were taken while the user’s hands were occupied.

Augmented reality may be put on the back-burner

Project Glass initially generated a great deal of hype because of its supposed use of augmented reality. When the project was revealed in April of this year, an accompanying demo video showed off the augmented reality capabilities of Project Glass. Google X Labs has been moving away from this aspect of Project Glass, with Thrun suggesting that the glasses may not include the same augmented reality capabilities that were promoted in Google’s demo video.
