The Consumer Electronics Show is in full swing and augmented reality is getting a lot of attention. Several technology developers have been showing off their latest products at the event, some of which are claimed to be taking augmented reality to a new level. Pioneer, a developer of mobile AR applications, has unveiled a new heads-up-display (HUD) system that uses the technology to help people test drive vehicles digitally. The system is scheduled to debut in Japan within the next few months.

Tentatively dubbed AR Display, the HUD sends consumers around a virtual racetrack in the vehicle of their choosing. Automakers have shown interest in this sort of software and it could be a major trend in the industry. Automakers hope to wet the appetites of potential buyers by letting them get a feel for the strength and performance of a vehicle without having to leave their homes.

The AR Display can do more than give people a chance to test drive digital vehicles. It can also be used in actual vehicles. The system is designed in such a way as to not interfere with a driver’s vision, providing minimal digital content. Using the system, drivers will be able to find directions to local shops and will even be able to plot a course for long treks across counties.

The system is on its way to Japan but Pioneer says that it will not make its way to the U.S. until 2013 at the earliest.
