NFC is gaining in popularity, finding acceptance all over the world. More companies, both big and small, are opting to make use of the technology as a way to expedite customer service. While much of the focus is on NFC’s affinity for contactless payments and mobile commerce, there are new ideas on the horizon that could change how people look at the technology. These ideas are pioneered by Nokia, and they have some interesting concepts on how to take NFC to the next level.

At the Nokia Research Center in California, a team of developers have come up with a new concept they are calling Nokia Explore and Share. The concept revolves around leverages many of the features most taken for granted in the majority of the worlds smart phones. Each has the capability to wireless connectivity, but few smart phone owners use their network to its full potential.

Explore and Share makes use of an extensive network of NFC tags, each capable of containing up to 1 gigabit of data. Users can make use of the tags to promote or share events as well as provide details regarding that event. From there, anyone can scan the tag and get all the information they need or add to the existing content.

Nokia believes that the tags are just the beginning. More smart phones are being built with the ability to “talk” to one another – a form of NFC technology. This feature allows users to transfer data between devices or update their software without having to hook up to anything.

According to Nokia, NFC is what will make the mobile industry truly community based.
