Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011
One of the biggest events in the gaming industry is coming this week. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, also known as E3, had long been an occasion in which game developers from all over the world showcase their latest and greatest productions. Sony is looking to make waves at this year’s E3 with their new handheld gaming platform, the Sony NGP. There is a lot of hype surrounding the NGP because of its use of augmented reality.

Other big name game companies have tried their hand with augmented reality in the past. Nintendo’s 3DS is one such effort, but is very unlike Sony’s offering. The 3DS relies heavily on a physical AR card, as well as lighting and a rather limited viewing distance. The NGP, however, can create AR experiences regardless of location or environmental effects. This is due to the advanced processors, cameras and motion sensors built into the unit.

Sony will be showing off the capabilities of their new platform at E3 with a new project called Reality Fighters. The game is designed to show audiences how each component in the system works together to form highly-realistic AR experiences. While such demo’s at E3 are often low quality given the fact they are in such early stages of development, Reality Fighters has been lauded for its performance.

Sony is investing heavily into augmented reality and has developed some of the most advanced AR programs currently available.
