The comic industry is well known for its tenacity and ability to keep up with modern technology. Following a trend gaining momentum throughout the whole of the print industry, DC Comics has begun using QR codes to promote their latest initiative. The renowned comic book company has taken note of the popularity in QR codes and how they can be used to help printed works compete in a society obsessed with technology. The company will launch its new campaign beginning in September of this year.

Each of DC’s 52 comic series will feature their own QR code. The codes herald a resetting of the company’s numbering system, effectively making the latest comics #1 in their series. The change comes as an attempt to reboot many of DC’s long-lived franchises. Along with the reset to the numbering system, DC’s most loved characters, such as Batman and Superman, are being recreated to better integrate into the modern world.

When scanned, the codes resolve to a website that lets readers see a sneak peak of the upcoming issues. Unfortunately, the sites linked to the codes are not optimized for mobile viewing. Several companies making use of QR codes have been subjected to the same pitfall in the past. Given that the codes work best when scanned by smart phones, linking them to a non-mobile website causes problems.

DC Comics will continue using QR codes until September. The company has not yet unveiled any plans to continue using the codes after that.
