One of the largest QR codes in the world has been created out of nothing more than soccer balls.

It took the work of 8 people dressed in black and white to lay out the code on the soccer field as a part of a promotion of the game between Ireland and Estonia. In order to test the code, skydivers were asked to use their smartphones to scan the 2 dimensional codes while they were in a freefall.

The skydivers jumped over Aviva stadium and fell at a speed of approximately 130 miles per hour. The use of the code by the divers placed the very first mobile bet, which resulted in a donation of €500 to a charity.

The completion of the code required over 2,000 soccer balls, as well as the use of a helicopter and a significant amount of careful organization and coordination.

This was all accomplished by Betfair, a company that has already been making headlines through their use of QR codes in unique ways, such as their previous creation of the bar codes by shaving them into soccer players’ heads.

Betfair is the largest internet betting community in the world, and it is now preparing for the Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup). As always, the event will take place in the United Kingdom, and will involve a match among several soccer teams which will then result in the awarding of one of the most coveted prizes in the world of soccer.

This year, Betfair is sponsoring the Bromley Football Club and has added QR codes to their marketing strategy to build hype around their team. The company has already used the technique to help with the promotion of beach volleyball teams in the UK.
