QR codes are proving to be a handy tool for local business all over the nation. In Seattle, the 2d codes are being used as a cost-effective way of exposure and allowing many business owners to save a small fortune on advertising fees. Being able to link the codes to sites like Facebook and Twitter, small businesses stand to gain significant online presence as intrigue over the black and white boxes grows.

Such is the case for Mr. Gyros, a small eatery in Seattle. Co-owner Arsheed was working the counter when the codes were implemented in his store to field questions about the code. Users scanning the QR code will be taken to the diners’ Facebook page and prompted to share their find with their friends. Since its initiation, Arsheed says he has seen a marked increase in business as well as an increase in online traffic on the Facebook page.

Other businesses have taken to using the codes on placards supplied by startup SPARQCode.

Arsheed understands that his customers may lack familiarity with the code, but that the learning curve associated with it is negligible. With the prevalence of mobile technology, he is sure people will pick up on the codes quickly and it will lose its novelty. For now, however, he is happy with the mystique of the code and the attention it is getting.

Smart phone manufacturers are not sitting on their hands on this issue. Within the last six months, the number of smart phones that come pre-equipped with applications that can read QR codes has increased. The industry is on track to make sure that every mobile device will be so equipped in the near future.
