A cloud computing cure for mobile commerce needed

Example of Cloud Based Computing

Technology has boosted mobile device usage and mobile commerce. Yet Osama Bedier, Vice President of payments at Google, says that there are still many barriers that need to be corrected before mobile commerce can become successful. Bedier was in San Francisco, speaking at the Web 2.0 exhibition.

One obstacle that was mentioned, was the current payment system; it needs to be digital, along with inventory. One suggestion was to make it all “cloud” based. Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted internet services.

There are differences between cloud and traditional hosting; with cloud, it is sold “on demand”, the person can use as much or as little as they like, and it is fully managed by the provider. A cloud can be public or private. Amazon web services are an example of a public cloud provider. A private cloud is a data center or proprietary network that only provides services to a limited amount of people.

Cloud computing is pretty new, and still has a long way to go; but it has gained wild popularity. It’s a way to increase capacity, or add on-the-go capabilities, without having to invest in a new infrastructure.  Another hurdle is having a system that allows secure sharing of identity information across multiple platforms.

No one wants to have to register for discounts or credit at every single store. There needs to be a single system where people can sign up for gift cards or credit that is secure, and compatible with all operating platforms. Once the mobile industry removes that block, then bridges can be put into place to close the gap between the online and off line commerce industry.

The people are ready for this next phase of paying via mobile device, and the technology is almost there. Once these obstacles are cleared, mobile commerce will explode.
