QR codes have made their way to the campuses of Abilene Christian University. On Tuesday, students were offered a free barcode scanning app for their smart phones, encouraging students to take advantage of the new codes riddled throughout the campus. The codes are allowing students to access digital content on their mobile devices and will help them connect with fellow students. The codes will also be used to promote school events.
The school’s library has already implemented the codes as a way to give students additional access to the facility’s resources. Josh Tooley, the help desk manager at the library, has said that he would like to see the codes used more prolifically as a way to keep students updated on the services the library provides.
Dr. James Langford, director of innovation and implementation at ACU, recognizes the codes for their innovative possibilities. He is hoping that more of the school’s events will be promoted with QR codes. According to Langford, students usually want to attend events, but are often too rushed to get all the information they need. Scanning the code associated with the event can upload all the details to their phones immediately.
“I’m hoping it will help in terms of convenience,” says Langford.
The overall goal of the university’s QR project is to tighten the gap between print and digital content. ACU is committed to staying on the cutting edge of technology to help its students achieve their goals.
