Augmented reality is beginning to make waves in the mobile industry. The technology has been around for a number of decades now, but it has only been recently that it has garnered any sort of acclaim. Initially, AR surfed on the heels of 3D technology, which drew in its own share of enthusiasm from both consumers and businesses. As the interest surrounding 3D wanes, however, AR has steamed ahead, and now more technology and telecommunications companies are taking notice.

Verizon Wireless has been investing in AR technology for some time now. So promising is the technology that the company began constructing a center dedicated to the development of augmented reality mobile applications. Last week, after years of planning and construction, the Application Innovation Center opened its doors to the public in downtown San Francisco, California. The company has invited app developers from across the country to come and share their creations with the center, hoping that pooling the creative and technological power of these people will advance AR technology at a quicker pace.

The center is equipped with a bevy of high-definition flat screens, each churning with images from the latest AR apps to come to the center. With apps ranging from adventure games to navigation and AR browsing, the center truly offers a glimpse into what can only be construed as the future of AR technology.

Several other telecommunications companies have taken up the banner of augmented reality, but Verizon Wireless is the first to take such a bold step in its development.
