UVC light sanitizer sales explode as lab confirms COVID-19 stays on a phone for 28 days

UVC Light Sanitizer for Virus

New research from Australia shows SARS-CoV-2 can remain on some surfaces for almost a month.

Researchers in Australia have determined that COVID-19 can stay viable on surfaces such as glass or even money for up to 28 days, sending UVC light sanitizer sales through the roof.

This study is a powerful reminder of the importance of disinfecting surfaces and washing hands.

According to the research, which was published in the Virology Journal on October 7, 2020, “SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious for significantly longer time periods than generally considered possible. These results could be used to inform improved risk mitigation procedures to prevent the fomite spread of COVID-19.”

Many consumers have most certainly been paying attention.  Since the publication, sales of UVC light sanitizer devices have taken off.  Consumers and businesses are buying with the intention of upgrading the efforts they are already making, such as regularly cleaning surfaces and areas that are commonly touched, as well as washing their hands.

For Canadian consumers, a top UVC light sanitizer from the US has arrived just in time for this news.

The research team determined that the virus remained and could be detected on the majority of surfaces at 20ºC (68ºF), which is an average temperature for homes and offices throughout fall through spring months.  The only exception was cotton, on which detection was limited after seven days.

“At 20°C, which is about room temperature, we found that the virus was extremely robust, surviving for 28 days on smooth surfaces such as glass found on mobile phone screens and plastic banknotes,” said one of the researchers from CSIRO, Debbie Eagles.
