Android fans, prepare to take a side; the inevitable war is brewing. If the rumor mill and speculators have the figures right, we should see this competition start in time for the holiday season. Google may be going toe to toe with Amazon. Amazon may be coming out with an Android family of devices.
Tech Crunch received a tip and confirmation late last year that Amazon would be launching their own (Android) app store. They also received a tip that Amazon would be working on their own Android-based tablet. Just over two weeks ago another site stated they had information from an industry insider who knew Amazon was getting ready to launch a whole “family” of devices.
Amazon will introduce these new devices just in time for Christmas this year. Earlier this month DigiTimes reported Amazon had already placed orders for 700 to 800 thousand tablet PC’s from a Taiwan based Quanta Computer. The entry level tablet is said to have a NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform with a dual core processor.
The larger tablet is said to sport a quad core processor. These devices will not replace the Kindle readers; the Amazon CEO made a point to state they would remain dedicated to their line of eBook readers. So when you put two and two together, you get Amazon producing their self contained ecosystem.
Amazon will have an Android app store, a TV show and streaming music service; a Cloud Drive and a Cloud Player. Amazon will also have a music store, and of course, the Kindle. Add all of these pieces together, and you get the big picture; one company offering its customers the complete package of goods.
