As QR codes continue to play a fundamental role in powering the progress of mobile commerce, how the codes are being used is evolving. Typically, the codes are often seen as part of static print marketing campaigns. Recently, more broadcasting companies have been experimenting with QR, hoping to engage a growing mobile consumer base. The latest company to adopt the codes is none other than the Home Shopping Network (HSN). The popular television marketplace has begun using the codes to allow shoppers to buy products with a simple scan.

The network found that a great number of people where making purchases through their smart phone’s mobile web browser. This gave company officials the idea to begin incorporating QR codes as a way to streamline the process. HSN’s initial trial of the codes will conclude today, October 10, but the network is likely to launch a full-fledged e-commerce solution powered by the codes during the holiday shopping season.

The codes have been appearing on HSN broadcasts since October 7. Scanning the code brings smart phone users to a mobile website where they can make purchases. Each product featured on the network is attributed with its own QR code, cutting down on the navigation consumers have to do to find the product they want.

How successful the experiment has been thus far is unknown, but the network may release the results of the campaign later in the month.
