Smart phone hack brings Google Wallet to Galaxy Nexus

Earlier this month, Verizon wireless announced that it would not be supporting Google’s ambitious mobile wallet program. The telecommunications company’s new Galaxy Nexus smart phone is one of the first mobile devices to be able to interface with NFC technology, which allows phones to double as payment devices. Google has invested heavily in NFC technology in order to establish its presence in the industry of mobile commerce, but the company has been finding staunch opposition from amongst competitors.

Technology, however, often succumbs to the whims of enterprising individuals who are unwilling to adhere to the wants of large companies like Verizon. The tech-savvy people at Droid-Life, an Android news community, have released a step-by-step guide detailing how Galaxy Nexus owners can install Google Wallet on their phones. The guide is fairly expansive and will require some skill to use. By the end, however, Galaxy Nexus owners will be able to make payments for goods using their phone.

Circumventing the rules of the mobile world is nothing new. Apple has long been the target of ambitious individuals looking to use the company’s mobile devices for things that the company itself did not want them to be used for. While hacking mobile devices in this way is not illegal, many telecommunications companies look down on the practice. Verizon has not filed any lawsuits concerning hacking or “jailbreaking” at this time.
