Scan to Donate to Japan

Recovery efforts in Japan continue in the wake of last month’s devastating tsunami. A worldwide support system has emerged, funneling money and volunteers to the battered country, assisting Japan in rebuilding after the tsunami and mitigate the ongoing nuclear crisis. Despite an unprecedented level of support from the worldwide community, the Japanese Red Cross is still in dire need of financial support.

Japan Neko, the nation’s largest native language search engine and online community, has partnered with the Red Cross to bolster the Japan Tsunami Relief Fund.

Neko has commissioned SET, a design firm famed for its use of QR codes, to make a new designer code to help raise awareness for the Red Cross charity outside of Japan. The code is made to resemble the iconic red circle that appears on the Japanese flag. In the center is a picture of a cartoon cat, which is modeled after a cat that was found in a flood ravaged city that quickly became a mascot for survival. SET has provided several designer codes for Japan to help spur relief efforts.

The codes will first be used in charity efforts conducted by the British Red Cross. Boxes placed at the main Japanese embassies in London will be adorned with the code. Those wishing to donate can either drop their contribution into the box or scan the code with their smart phone and make a donation online.
