Early last year, QR codes were a growing trend in the travel and tourism industries. The codes allowed travel agencies to quickly distribute information concerning popular locations around the world. Some states in the U.S. used the codes to promote tourism and local businesses with varying degrees of success. While QR codes have proven their value to these industries, augmented reality may soon become the tool of choice for travel agencies. Such is the case with Saga Travel, a travel agency based in the UK.

The agency has embedded an augmented reality experience into their latest line of brochures. Using the Aurasma AR browser, smart phone users can activate this content from either their iPhone or Android mobile device. Users will be able to tour virtual destinations in South Africa and cruises traveling throughout the Atlantic region. Aurasma is one of the first augmented reality browsers that can initiate virtual content without the need for specialized tags, such as QR codes. Instead, the application can recognize images that are associated with AR experiences.

Saga Travel aims to stay at the cutting edge of technology by adopting augmented reality. The technology is an effective way to engage consumers, especially those attached at the hip to their smart phones. Augmented reality may perform well in the travel business, as it allows consumers to take tours of destinations without having to leave the comfort of their homes.
