Reality is becoming more akin to science fiction as augmented reality continues to gain traction all over the world. AR is becoming famous for its implications for smart phones and mobile devices, but it may be in the auto industry that the technology truly shines. Cars with virtual heads-up-displays are often featured in futuristic movies, but car manufacturers BMW and Volvo say that the technology in movies is primitive compared to what they can offer.

Augmented reality is one of the technologies that will revolutionize the auto industry, according to BMW officials. By turning the windshield into an intelligent display device, drivers will not only have a better time driving, but will also be able to keep an eye on important indicators throughout their travels. Conventional displays are not hard to keep track of today, but such displays do no account for sudden changes in the road nor can they virtually illuminate the road ahead in pitch darkness.

Both BMW and Volvo offer augmented reality displays in some of the more exclusive models. These displays show the current speed, fuel usage and warn of upcoming road signs or changes in the speed limit. These displays also integrate with the vehicles satellite navigation, superimposing directions right onto the road. All this is just the tip of the iceberg, says BMW.

While the year 2000 has come and gone and there have yet to be any signs of flying cars whizzing about, at least such technologies as augmented reality certainly seem to be pushing society towards a Jeston-esque future.
