QR code gets in shape with Virginia’s athletic event tracker

Town of Staunton Virginia

The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department of Virginia has begun their phase of web 2.0 marketing with what they call their “Recreation Domination” program. Recreation Domination is the name of the department’s new video blog featuring information on athletic leagues. Throughout the year, 23 leagues are up and running and the blog will spotlight each one on a weekly basis as well as introduce new programs and keep track of events.

With reports that smart phone usage is expected to increase by 60% this year alone, the department has opted to use QR codes as a promotional tool for their blog. They will be showcasing the codes on posters around parks and in pamphlets as well as on their website. The code itself will link straight to the most recent video blog and allow users to share it on Facebook or Twitter.

The overall goal is to raise awareness of the recreational activities available in Staunton and attract participants to join in. This is backed by Staunton’s resolution to make 2011 Event Announcements with QR Codesa healthier year and to promote a more active community.

By using QR codes, the department hopes to engage the younger crowd of Staunton. Reports from market analysts suggest that smart phones will be more popular than laptops and other mobile devices among consumers ages 18-35. Of the current participants in the departments athletic leagues, 95% fit into that demographic and the department will look to use that to their advantage.

The QR campaign is expected to hit in the middle of February.
