QR Code Scanning
Archival Youth Marketing, a market research firm focused on the younger generation, has released the results of a new survey detailing how students view QR codes. QR codes have been growing in popularity amongst educators looking to engage tech-savvy students. These students, however, have yet to be won over by the blocky barcodes. Archival surveyed 534 students across 24 campuses throughout the U.S. and found that QR codes still have a long way to go before they find a place amongst students.

Of the students surveyed, 81% were owners of smart phones or other mobile devices capable of scanning mobile barcodes. The majority of students had seen a QR code before and were familiar with how they worked. A staggering 75% said that they were unlikely to use the codes in any way. The acceptance of QR codes amongst students is lagging behind the rate at which educators are incorporating the technology. The sheer lack of interest coming from students may put an end to campus QR codes before they have had an opportunity to show how useful they can be.

QR codes are well known as a powerful tool to engage consumers, but the codes have not performed well with those whose lives are fast-paced. For students, the codes have proven to be more of a novelty than a boon. This new information from Archival may spur educators to change how they use the codes.
