New Blackberry with Augmented Reality App Installed

More Smartphone’s are including augmented reality (AR) apps that are preinstalled on their devices. Because Smart phone technology is becoming more advanced; AR applications are widely evolving. Consumers loyal to RIM should be happy to know their next BlackBerry device could feature an AR browser.

RIM announced the new BlackBerry Bold (touch and type) device would come preinstalled with Wikitude Augmented Reality browser. This AR browser will be able to Geo-reference information about stores, buildings and other objects in your physical surroundings.

The new Smartphone’s have RIM’s latest Operating System (BlackBerry 7) and have combined utilities to aid AR technology. RIM also plans on integrating Application Programming Interface (API’s) in its newer model 99XX Bold devices, for advanced users like application developers. The app developers would be able to use the AR in their applications also.

Smartphone’s aren’t the only ones getting into the AR business. Several companies are starting to use AR to advertise their business products, vacation resorts and much more. Some cities are using AR to help tourists get around the city, and locals to find promotions at certain retail shops.

San Francisco’s area transit system and Hertz rental cars also use AR apps. Several schools are using AR apps as teaching tools, including the NASA Space Station, which uses AR simulated programs to teach astronauts how to make repairs and orientation with control panels.

Augmented reality isn’t all work and no play; it’s still being used to develop games, social applications and other cool stuff.
