National Geographic has launched a new mobile application that looks to blur the lines between the physical and digital worlds. The app uses augmented reality to bring exotic animals to life, allowing people to interact with them in a number of different ways. Augmented reality technology has been gaining a great deal of support in the marketing world due to its knack for making advertising much more immersive and engaging. Consumers have responded well to the recent deployment of augmented reality initiatives, which has encouraged companies and organizations to make use of the technology.

National Geographic showed off their latest development in a mall in Hungary. The group partnered with Appshaker, a British AR development firm, to produce a new mobile application. Using a smart phone’s camera, the app superimposes a digital animal, such as a lion, onto the physical environment. This animal can interact with its surroundings, giving mobile users a chance to see how the animal lives outside the confines of a magazine page or their TV screen.

The app was showcased in Hungary on a large scale. Shoppers at a local mall in Budapest were able to stand on augmented reality markers that were placed on the floor and have their image streamed to a massive screen nearby. The app would then superimpose an animal near them, which would interact with them based on what they were doing at the time.
