Augmented reality gains spotlight after Austin Mayor wins re-election

QR codes have been grabbing attention in the world of politics lately. In the U.S., politicians have been bombarding the nation with election campaigns. Some have chosen QR codes as a way to reach out to the public, but this practice has been met with varying degrees of success. Augmented reality is causing a stir in the political world, with hype being generated over the past weekend after the technology helped Lee Leffingwell, Mayor of Austin, Texas, to win re-election.

VoterView cited as key reason to success of campaign

Leffingwell chose VoterView, a new augmented reality platform from an Austin-based technology company of the same name, to help build his campaign for re-election. Using the platform, Leffingwell created a simple, 30-second augmented reality marketing campaign that was well received amongst voters. The advertisements associated with his campaign could be viewed on smart phones that were equipped with the VoterView application. J.D. Gins, campaign manager for Leffingwell, notes that the use of the application and augmented reality gave the re-elected Mayor an edge against the competition.

Well suited for mobile consumers, augmented reality continues to attract interest

Augmented reality has begun to attract a great deal of interest in many industries all over the world. The technology allows for more interactivity between the physical and digital worlds, which is often exemplified in marketing or mobile games. As mobile technology has grown in popularity, so too has augmented reality, which is well suited for smart phones and tablet devices.

VoterView: The world’s first AR application for elections and political campaigns

VoterView was launched last week and claims to be the world’s first mobile augmented reality application designed specifically for elections and campaigns. The platform can be used by politicians to create interactive and high-tech campaigns, while voters can use the application to view these campaigns. Voters with smart phones are also able to access additional information concerning a particular campaign, such as how much support a particular candidate has and how to make donations to a campaign.

Leffingwell won re-election this past Saturday, able to garner 52% of the city’s voters.
