Mobile money in Asia

Mobile Payments in Asia

About two weeks ago, Cards Asia had its 16th year showcasing end to end payment solutions and applications. Asia’s largest innovative card and payments solutions conference drew almost seven thousand visitors from over 50 countries this year.

A two day executive conference was also held alongside the exhibition. The conference covered case studies and panel discussions regarding cards and payments. Topics such as alternative payments and innovations, and creating winning card strategies were addressed. Senior executives from government, ministries, banking and mobile attended also.

The cards and payments Asia conference is dedicated to developments and opportunities in Asia’s cards and payments market. Exhibitors at the yearly show see this platform as the place to be for strategic access to the regions high growth markets.

This year’s exhibit focused on cash-less payment technology such as RFID, NFC and Mobile Money. As one bank manager stated, prepaid debit and credit cards are also a massive opportunity in some areas. More people are trending towards a “less cash” society and becoming very comfortable using bank cards for every size of purchase.

India and Southeast Asia has a combined population of more than 1.8 billion people. In Indonesia, there are around 40 million people that don’t have a bank account. The large populated cities helped push card payments into mass popularity, and vendors think the same can happen with mobile based payments and NFC payments.

The Cards Asia exhibit had more than 200 participants from over 20 countries. The strong support from exhibitors, sponsors and the public show what an important role the Asian region has in driving and influencing smart card and payment technology.
