The company will be joining the smartphone advertising world in 2013 as it looks for new streams of revenue.
Tumblr has revealed that it will be taking its first steps into the world of mobile marketing this year, as it makes a number of considerable efforts to add new earnings within this growing environment.
The massively popular blogging network has been growing rapidly and is noting the importance of smartphones and tablets.
The social landscape over smartphones and tablets has been rapidly expanding and Tumblr has determined that mobile marketing in this area will increase its revenue streams in a meaningful way. In 2012, the company made the decision for the first time to allow advertisers to pay for premium placement on the site. This has propelled the site toward overall online promotions over these devices.
Mobile marketing was the next obvious step for the company that was already finding ads profitable.
It is now hopeful that through a successful entry into mobile marketing, it will see its first annual profit. Though its online revenue stream has been successful, it is only this year that it is starting to focus on the advertising for its smartphone platform.
Bloomberg stated that during the first half of 2013, companies will become capable of using mobile marketing for the promotion of “their posts and blogs to bigger audiences on Tumblr’s mobile application, similar to the way the Web version works.”
The vice president of Tumblr, Derek Gottfrid, made the initial announcement of the company’s plans for mobile marketing. It aligns well with the massive number of people that are already using the Tumblr mobile platform, which has grown four times over within the last half year. This has been pushing the company ever closer to the top online spot, which is making its entry into smartphone advertising even more important, said Gottfrid.
David Karp, the CEO of Tumblr, had previously expressed distaste for search advertising and the typical type of online display ads, is now hopeful that the company will be able to use mobile marketing to become profitable. This will allow customers to have their own posts stand out by paying for the higher positions. There are currently nearly 100 million blogs on Tumblr.
