Holiday Shopping 2011
As had been predicted, Thanksgiving was an extremely profitable day for retailers online, with reports from IBM showing that sales this year were 39 percent higher than they were on the same holiday in 2010, with a sharp increase in shopping using a mobile device.

IBM wasn’t alone in these reports. PayPal and eBay have also reported comparable trends. For example, PayPal Mobile has reported that Thanksgiving 2011 saw an increase of 511 percent worldwide in mobile payments over last year on Thanksgiving.

The most common time for American consumers to shop using PayPal on Thanksgiving day was between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm PST. Globally, the most common time for shoppers to make purchases using mobile was between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm PST.

When compared to 2010, there was an over 350 percent increase in the total number of customers worldwide who used PayPal mobile this year on Thanksgiving. The most common location of these mobile customers was in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, and New York.

eBay announced that the number of American shoppers that made purchases by way of eBay Mobile was more than twice the number that was seen in 2010 on Thanksgiving, with the most popular shopping time landing between 6 pm and 7 pm PST.

Similarly, there was a 345 percent increase measured by GSI Commerce in American mobile sales in 2011 when compared to last year. Moreover, Milo – a local product listings platform – saw an increase in searches of 557 percent on this year’s Thanksgiving over last year’s.
