This year more than ever before, retailers have benefitted from holiday shopping that has been done through mobile devices and, according to this year’s RichRelevance study on the subject, 90 percent of the purchases came from iPhones and iPad devices.

The results of the study also suggested that there is no end to the mobile shopping trend anywhere in the near future. In fact, it is predicted that it will only accelerate due to the fact that there are already over 24 million tablet users and 90 million smartphone users in the United States alone.

As the technology landscape continues to evolve, RichRelevance works to provide businesses with insight into the way shoppers are making their purchasing decisions and how they are completing their transactions.

This particular study is the first of its kind from the firm and it analyzed shopping sessions that spanned from April to December 2011, totaling 3.4 billion separate transactions, in order to identify the holiday trends for this year, and help to get a glimpse of what can be expected for 2012.

According to the CEO of RichRelevance, David Selinger, the figures that the firm has gleaned from its various retailing partners websites illustrate the importance of the Apple iOS platform in providing consumers with easy access to mobile web shopping. He went on to point out that “while still below 5 percent in total conversion, mobile traffic’s doubling in eight months is a trend we only see accelerating.”

Selinger also noted that success in this marketplace requires brands and retailers to make certain that they are remaining relevant throughout the various channels where consumers are making their shopping decisions and their purchases to ensure a “seamless experience” throughout their behaviors, devices, and the context as a whole.
