The largest online marketplace in the world, eBay, which also leads in mobile commerce, has released the results of its third annual report for the “Top Shopped” items for 2011, which ranks the pop culture trends and moments that brought about the most attention from shoppers.

In order to assign the ranks, eBay performed an analysis of sales data based on the items that were purchased throughout the various categories of its marketplace, to identify the themes that were most interesting to the public this year. It looked into everything from toys to pop stars, from electronics and technology to celebrity items.

eBay has a unique perspective for this type of analysis as it includes over 200 million listings every day in its marketplace which boasts a community of almost 100 million users. Its report is often used as a barometer of trends, tracking the movements and events that were most important throughout the year.

Also noted was the number of additional mobile devices that were used to access eBay listings through the fingertips of users with smartphones and tablets. This figure significantly increased over the last year.

The items that topped the list of most popular trends in the United States in 2011 included those relating to Twilights, the NFL (with the most popular team being the Green Bay Packers), Harry Potter, Call of Duty, iPad, Glee, Justin Bieber, Sade, and Charlie Sheen.

Similarly, the report noted the top most expensive American purchases from eBay Mobile, which were: a Mercedes-Benz (S-Class), which was purchased for $212,685; an Hermes blue sapphire ostrich Birkin bag, which was purchased for $19,975; and a Babe Ruth #53 1933 Goudey PSA baseball card which was purchased for $19,500.
