Dumbphones and flip phones become hottest mobile device trend

Dumbphones - Smartphones - flip phones - old mobile phone technology

Top celebrities from Kim Kardashian to Rihanna have been spotted using versions of these devices.

Dumbphones – the technology that once brought on widespread mockery when smartphones entered the scene – are returning to the trendy spotlight. In the United States and Canada, an estimated over 90 percent of people between the ages of 15 and 34 years have a smartphone.

That said, trends are shifting to bring back the popularity of far more basic cellular phone models.

Considering the dependence that consumers have been building to their smartphones, it’s difficult to imagine that dumbphones could have the slightest chance to return to popularity. However, many people are finding that it is precisely that dependence on their devices that they’re not too wild about. The convenience and the experience is appealing, but it has an effect on our lives and our wellness.

If that wasn’t enough, then their re-emergency among top level celebrities is certainly having an influence. A number of different celebs have been spotted using new versions of old school flip phones including Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and even Daniel Day-Lewis.

Large electronics companies are releasing dumbphones and less-smartphones as well as smartphones.

For instance, Samsung has come up with the Galaxy J2 Pro, which is a smartphone but without internet connectivity. According to the company, it was designed with students in mind. The idea is to give them a phone, but eliminate the distraction that stops them from studying.

The Wall Street Journal personal technology columnist, Geoffrey Fowler went so far as to write about it. He determined that the trend had grown to such a level that it deserved some focus in the paper.

“It’s okay to not use a smartphone. In fact, if you don’t want one, you’re not alone,” stated Fowler. “Whether you’re on a budget, seeking security, preparing for emergencies, or just looking to unplug, I’ll help you find the right basic phone.”

While some consumers are choosing to replace their smartphones with dumbphones, others have found that they are happy having both. Each plays a different role in their lives. That being said, the demand for flip phones is steadily growing.
