The black and white blocky patterns known as QR codes have left many in awe of their marketing versatility. Meanwhile leaving others wondering if the codes could, somehow, be more visually appealing While the codes can feature a number of different designs, many shy away from incorporating them for fear that they might interfere with a smart phones ability to scan it. QR codes are not alone in their field, however, and competition is fierce in mobile marketing.

Both NFC and Microsoft Tags are aesthetically unique. NFC tags can take on the form of a wide array of symbols while Microsoft Tags can incorporate actual pictures into their makeup. Compared to the competition, QR codes are surprisingly austere. A little bit of color may be the only thing the codes need, according to web developer David Szotten.

Szotten has developed a design platform specifically for the codes, called Pretty QR. The platform allows anyone with a code to apply a variety of colors to the pattern. A logo can also be embedded on the code, offering users a new layer of branding potential. While the colors will not disturb the functionality of the codes, a logo might. Users are encouraged to thoroughly test codes before using them.

With QR codes becoming more popular, it may be time to upgrade their appearance. Szotten’s platform may be the beginning of a new era of flashy, eye-catching codes.
