Augmented Reality
Augmented reality may be the future of marketing, but that is not the only use for the technology. In recent years, augmented reality has advanced at a rapid pace. Technology developers have made major strides in taking the technology from the regions of novelty to the realm of practicality. These efforts have not gone unnoticed by the U.S. government. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has begun investing in a new project from Innovega, a Washington-based technology developer.
Innovega specializes in high-tech eyewear. The company has created a new generation of contact lenses that incorporates augmented reality technology. DARPA has taken a keen interest in the potential benefits these lenses may have for the Department of Defense, its overseeing agency, and has begun investing in Innovega.

The lenses themselves are relatively simple. They are constructed using nanotechnology, which frees wearers from the need to wear bulky peripherals. The digital displays that the lenses generate are comprised of megapixels, allowing for clarity but not obscuring the wearer’s vision of the physical world. The Department of Defense has been experimenting with augmented reality technology for use on the battlefield and has commissioned DARPA to investigate more intuitive alternatives to visors and AR helmets.

The AR contact lenses may have caught the interest of the U.S. military, but they will not be available only to soldiers. In the future, Innovega plans to release the lenses to consumers, giving them the ability to see the world in a different way entirely.
