Mobile technology is proving to be a useful medium for recruitment. A growing number of job seekers, ever keen to stand out from amongst the crowd, have been plastering QR codes onto their resumes and business cards. Until recently, this practice has been reserved to those looking for work. Now, however, more companies are advertising their open positions via the codes. While the trend is growing tractions amongst public businesses, one would scarcely imagine that a secretive government agency would follow suit.

The UK’s counter-intelligence and security agency known as MI5 is using QR codes to look for new recruits. As with all agencies in its line of work, MI5 has been sure to stay on the cutting edge of technology, mobile or otherwise. The new recruitment campaign is geared toward a new generation of tech-savvy individuals whose minds are already saturated in technology.

The codes are appaearing on print and digital ads and resolve to the agency’s website. Unfortunately, MI5 has broken the cardinal rule of QR campaigns – making the website mobile friendly – and the site is particularly difficult to navigate via mobile device. Mobile visitors to the career section will find that, though there are open spots available, job listings are hard to find. This simple oversight may hamper the agency’s recruiting efforts, at least until the problem can be rectified.

With QR codes gaining popularity all over the world, more government agencies may begin implementing QR codes into their various, public operations.
